Behind Bakehouse

Our founder and creative director Alan Ramm has always had a passion for designing high-quality furniture using authentic and time-honoured techniques. Although the business began its life at the Old Bakehouse Kilns, part of a baker’s shop in the centre of the old wood merchant town of Stamford, the origin of our ethos goes back further.

When renovating the first studio, Alan’s interest in design led him to discover remnants of Shaker furniture within the building and that, along with inspiration from the nearby grand Elizabethan estate of Burghley House built by William Cecil more than 500 years ago, created a desire to bring beautiful, handcrafted English kitchens to clients worldwide.

Celebrating the provenance and quality of luxury English design has been central to the Bakehouse mission from day one, always drawing on the traditional methods of joinery to create exceptional quality, long-lasting furniture with en-during style. Alan and the Bakehouse team aim to integrate traditional English carpentry methods into all bespoke projects to ensure a perfect balance between the old and new, shaping spaces that are expertly crafted to suit modern life.
